Mountain Winderness Activities

La Grande HotelThe mountains surrounding La Grande have so many activities to take on. Horseback riding, biking, wilderness exploring are just some of the many opportunities for wilderness enthusiasts. Here is a sampling of things to do in the Blues and Elkhorns.

Only 15 minutes from La Grande is the famous ghost town of Sumpter. For those who wish to travel farther afield, look for reminents of ghosts' pasts in Bourne, Auburn and Granite. These are popular metal dectecting areas. Keep in mind that it's neither polite nor wise to traspass in areas where there are active mining claims.

While in the Sumpter area, take a step back in time on one of the historic steam trains of the Sumpter Valley Railroad. The scenery is beautiful and the train whistle is a joy to hear. Educational and fun, it's a perfect family activity.

Within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest lies the Eagle Cap Wilderness. This is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in all of the Northwest. Pick up your NW Forest Pass in La Grande before you head out and then choose from the 534 miles of trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. You'll be treated to meadows of wildflowers, abundant wildlife, alpine lakes and bare granite peaks.
