La Grande Oregon

Year-round Water Recreation

La Grande HotelExpect excitement when you go white-water rafting on the Grand Ronde. Rapids range from Class I through VI. The magnificent scenery and wildlife you'll see is unbeatable. The rapids may be more calm on the Wallowa River, but for those who want to combine their love of water with the fun of a train ride, a 'River to Rails' rafting or kayaking trip and train ride will provide fun for the whole family. The Grand Ronde and Wallowa Rivers are also favorites with fly fishers.

There are 13 species of fish, including trout, steelhead and salmon, in the many rivers and lakes surrounding La Grande. Morgan Lake, located 5 miles above La Grande is a great place to take the family to fish. Pack a picnic and the swim suits. The area is wheelchair accessible. For the purist, Minam River is a perfect fishing destination. One lodge there is reached only by horseback, foot or small bush plane. The waters are clear. The fish are wild. Fishing in the Lostine River area is scenic and you can expect to see Brook Trout.

Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, near La Grande, offers a variety of year-round water recreation opportunities including fishing, water-skiing, boating and swimming.

One of the largest hot springs in the Northwest is found just west of La Grande. Historically, the area is a traditional Nez Perce site. Today, visitors relax in the hotter pools and swim in the more temperate waters there.
