La Grande Oregon
Welcome to La Grande Oregon (population approx. 12,540 residents).
La Grande is a small, neighborly city located at the edge of the Grande Ronde Valley, east of the Blue Mountains. It is the county seat of Union County, Oregon and home to Eastern Oregon University. A 250 mile stretch of I-84 connects La Grande with Portland in Western Oregon. To the east (175 miles) is Boise Idaho.
Boasting low crime rates and plenty of activities for kids, La Grande is a great family city. You'll have to look hard to find traffic congestion. Beginning in 1911, the citizens of La Grande came together to support a public library. Today, the modern, recently-completed Cook Memorial Library graces the city. In addition to EOU, the city has a public school system that includes one high school, a middle school and three elementary schools.
La Grande's pedestrian-friendly Main Street welcomes shoppers to a variety of experiences located in several historically interesting buildings. Whether your interest lies in antiquing, enjoying coffee and donuts, locating the right flies for your fishing trip or getting a new set of wheels, you'll find what you need in downtown La Grande.
La Grande is also a hub for commercial ventures. The city has four developing business/industrial parks designed to fit a variety of commercial needs. The Union Pacific railroad line runs through La Grande. Education and health-care (Grande Ronde Hospital) are significant employers in the La Grande area. Boise Cascade and Nash Trailers both have manufacturing plants locally. Other companies include Columbia Basin Crop Production, Fleetwood Travel Trailers, and Borden Chemical Co. The modern, 8,700 sq. ft. Blue Mountain Conference Center is available for a variety of meeting venues.
